The Dos and Don’ts of Using Rugs on Top of Carpet
April 25, 2023Do you know what the best thing about rugs is? They’re not permanent fixtures. If you want to remove one, it’s not like a carpet, which requires an entire renovation project. You can roll up and move rugs without fuss. But avoiding having to switch rugs because they don’t work with the room is always better. Check out these four common rug placement mistakes to avoid in your home.
Wrong Size
The worst thing a rug can be is either too big or too small. You have a vision of how you want it in that room. When that vision doesn’t come true, it’s a real bummer. Some of the most common places to situate a rug are the dining room, bedroom, and living room.
You never want the rug to be too small in these areas, especially the dining room. The rug should encompass the entire table and the chairs, with a little room left over. You need the rug to act as a buffer between the chair legs and the floors. You may want to size the rug up by twice the diameter of the table.
Wrong Material
Rugs come in various materials. Homeowners can choose from wool, jute, sisal, polyester, nylon, and so much more. But lots of homeowners make the mistake of placing a rug in an area of the home where it shouldn’t be.
First, you need to consider the material you’re choosing, then decide if the environment you want to place the rug in is suitable for it. For example, wool rugs are extremely durable and allergy friendly, which makes them very popular. However, they retain a lot of moisture, so you never want to place them in humid places like bathrooms or basements.
Wrong Style
Remember, you heard it here first. Rugs don’t need to match everything in the room. The interior design industry is telling us matching is out. Consider it a thing of the past. Finding pieces that complement each other without being too similar is more important.
Aim for coordinating rather than matching. The area rug is often the signature piece or the focal point of most rooms. And in others, it simply needs to tie everything together. A rug with a unique pattern inside a minimalistic space can be the exact touch you may need.
Wrong Placement
Finally, the placement of a rug is crucial. Homeowners have a hard time trying to decide on rug placement inside a bedroom and living room. Remember that the rug should be visible. It won’t be when there are too many items on top of it.
This isn’t to say you can’t place a coffee table or a bed on top of the rug. But you don’t want it to take up the entire rug area. A bedroom rug can either have the end section of the bed on top of it or sit at the foot of the bed. Look into some rugs made to size to ensure the one you get fits the room perfectly.
