3 Smart Ways to Connect Rooms With a Cohesive Color Scheme
September 25, 2025Open-concept spaces are a popular feature of modern architecture. If your home has an open-concept floor plan, rugs can be a great way to define spaces. Here’s how.
What Is an Open-Concept Floor Plan?
An “open concept” interior is one that feels large, airy, and open. There are fewer walls separating rooms. Instead, common areas, such as the kitchen, dining, and living rooms, are all in one large space rather than divided into smaller rooms.
Open-concept floor plans make homes feel larger due to the lack of walls and abundance of natural light. However, they can also get rid of the cozy, intimate feeling of more traditional homes.
How Rugs Can Define Spaces
Area rugs can be a great way to clearly create smaller spaces within your home. For example, a large rectangular rug can delineate the borders of the living area. Add comfortable elements like throw pillows and cozy blankets to complete the room.
Adding a rug underneath your dining table will also help make it feel like a separate room rather than a table in your kitchen. You can even use smaller, circular area rugs to create small sitting areas or reading nooks. The only limit is your imagination!
How To Style an Area Rug
Area rugs should complement the existing color palette of your home. Work with the colors you already have in your décor pieces and large items like furniture. Area rugs are easier and cheaper to replace than a full set of furniture, so it’s best to avoid planning an entire room around a rug that you may not love in a few years.
Your rug should be large enough to fit beneath the front two legs of your large furniture pieces at a minimum. Another option is to choose a rug large enough to encompass the entirety of your furniture items, with a few extra inches of space. This design choice looks great in open-concept spaces!
